Spot Buffalo, Foxes, Birds and more
The wild landscape of the Northwest Territories is home to stunning views, lakes, rivers and amazing Wildlife. It is one of the last remaining places you will see Woodland Bison or ‘Buffalo’ roaming free in the wild. Also, you can spot various wildlife such as foxes, black bear, wolverines, bald eagles, sand cranes, and other rare animals that may show up along the way…
We explore a few popular areas where buffalo (officially called, woodland bison) herds can often be found along Northwest Territories Highway 3. After passing the community of Behchoko (Rae – Edzo) 100 km from Yellowknife, the highway will be passing through Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary. You will see herds of bison just at the side of the highway, or even slowly crossing the highway. Some of the bison maybe lying across the road until they notice the traffic.
The wild landscape of the North West Territories is home not only to the bison, but other wildlife such as black bear, wolverines, bald eagles, sand cranes, and other rare animals that may show. Be sure to keep your eyes open! We will slow down or stop when our driver or the guide spots any wildlife.
