Wildfire 2023

September 4, 2023

THANKS FOR WAITING!

AURORA VILLAGE WILL RE-OPEN ON SEPTEMBER 16, 2023

for nightly Aurora-viewing until October 13, 2023.

Evacuation Order due to the wildfire is now lifted as of September 6th.

Yellowknife residents will return to the city after 3 weeks of evacuation.

Things will slowly come back to normal, and the visitors can once again experience our aurora borealis!

Our deepest gratitude goes to all the firefighters and first- and essential-workers that have kept Yellowknife from the wildfire.

And thank YOU for your patience in the period of uncertainty.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any question and concern about your existing bookings.

AURORA VILLAGE

August 23rd, 2023

Wildfire has been burning in our Northwest Territories as you might have seen or heard in the news.

The city of Yellowknife is still under the threat of growing wildfire on day to day basis.   A lot of firefighting, as well as building defense against the fire, have been ongoing and making progress.  But the weather still needs to cooperate.  We need more rain, but less wind!

Northwest Territories government issued an Evacuation Order on August 16th.   It has almost been a week since most Yellowknife residents evacuated to as far south as Calgary and other towns in Alberta.  Yellowknife is almost empty, except for the essential workers and a few residents.   All the hotels have been open only to essential workers with very limited staff to work.   All stores and restaurants, except one supermarket, are closed.  There is still no announcement from the government when they can all return to Yellowknife.  Some say it’ll be days, and some say weeks before evacuation order is lifted allowing the residents to come home. We can only restart our tours when the city is back and resumes its normal operations, including hospitals, emergency and all essential services, and it is also safe for all travelers.  We anticipate that it would take at least several days or a week after the lifting of the evacuation order that all 20,000 residents head back home and return to their jobs.

Therefore, Aurora Village will remain closed until we hear clear directions from the government.

At this time, we will have to cancel all tours booked for September 1 – 15, 2023.

You will be receiving a FULL refund onto your credit card for the cancelled tour.

We  are hopeful that we need not to cancel our tours for the rest of the season from September 16 to October 13th

Should we need to cancel, we will be notifying next week to those who have bookings for the period.

We thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and your patience.

(Aurora Village had previously announced on August 15ththat all August tours are suspended for the rest of the month.   Thick smoke and smell of the wildfire with deteriorating air-quality were big concerns for us.    The City of Yellowknife had declared State of Emergency on August 14th.)

August 15th, 2023

AURORA VILLAGE is immediately suspending taking any bookings for this Summer/Fall season until further notice.

However, we will continue to provide our tours until August 19th only to those who are in Yellowknife and have confirmed bookings.

We are hoping to resume our operations in September, and open our bookings when situation improves as the temperature start to drop.

Dates are yet to be determined.   (Please note that we will continue to take Winter season bookings.)

This is due to the wildfires continuing to burn around Yellowknife.   Air quality has also greatly deteriorated.

City of Yellowknife and Government of Northwest Territories both have declared State of Emergency.

We thank you for your understanding and we look forward to welcoming you very soon,
